Talent is what you have. A dream is where you start. Action is how you get there.

TalentDreams has pioneered the notion of The Accidental Mentor
This simply means that you’re probably already acting as a mentor through what’s called micro-mentoring, and you don’t even realize it.
Micro-mentoring is a short-term, focused mentoring relationship that provides quick, specific advice, feedback, or direction on a defined topic, skill, or goal, through a single meeting. It differs from traditional, long-term mentoring by emphasizing timely, on-demand help for specific areas of interest rather than general, ongoing guidance. This flexible approach allows mentees to receive timely support without mentors taking on the commitment of a lengthy mentoring program. It can be done online or in person.
TalentDreams has built an online platform to deliver micro-mentoring at scale, by matching Champions (mentors) with Dreamers (youth), who are interested to learn more from them. This is called a MentorMoment™.
So what exactly is a MentorMoment™? It’s an interaction where the Dreamer learns something (small or big) from the Champion. Even a small learning can serve a big purpose. We make it easy for you to make an impact.
The notion of The Accidental Mentor, the concept of “micro-mentoring”, the value of a MentorMoment™, and the awareness that everyone is an “accidental mentor” is becoming mainstream, partly due to the efforts TalentDreams has made to bring awareness to the broader population.
Harvard Business Review (HBR)
In March, the Harvard Business Review published an article called You Don’t Need a Mentor to Get the Career Advice You Need. The article documents the value of “micro-mentorship”, which they refer to as essentially “a short, actionable (interaction) that can make a tangible difference.”
The article encourages people to find “hidden mentors” and notes that “thoughtful strangers can be just as pivotal as interactions with the hidden mentors you already know.” The article goes on to say that it may feel challenging to find these moments, “but micro-mentoring can be just as beneficial as cultivating a single mentor.”
This (above) as well as what is described below, is precisely what TalentDreams was designed to do. It’s almost as if they wrote the article for us!
The HBR article encourages people to “crowdsource advice” and notes that “it can feel daunting to reach out to ask a stranger for advice”. But that “it is also worth remembering that many people appreciate being asked for their input. And that “in fact, (a) micro-mentoring request may enable them (hidden mentors) to broaden their impact and feel a sense of accomplishment without having to add an ongoing commitment to their already stuffed calendars.”
The final conclusion noted in the article is that “micro-mentoring can be just as beneficial as cultivating a single mentor who—despite being able to offer more targeted advice based on your long-term connection—may develop a fixed perspective.” While this article is focused on the value this can have for someone’s career, this framework can work for many use cases beyond career development.
We’re thrilled HBR has done such a great job recognizing the value of micro-mentoring and has put a spotlight on the exact type of program we’ve designed at TalentDreams.
The George Washington University (GW)
Micro-mentoring has proven so effective that The George Washington University (research GW a bit more) has developed a program where “faculty may seek mentoring on a number of professional development needs from a pool of mentors with diverse specialties and experiences to gain new, varied perspectives.”
GW understands that they can accelerate the success of their new faculty members by leveraging the insights of those who are more experienced.
Why do we build out so many programs for accomplished adults, and have literally NONE for youth and young adults who need them most?!
TalentDreams has changed this and is leveling the playing field.
Why micro-mentoring works for Generation Z
The VP of Student Life, a self-described “Educational Inclusionist and Evidence-Based Practitioner” at Maryville University, wrote a great article evangelizing the value of micro-mentoring, specifically for Gen Z (the target audience TalentDreams supports).
Micro-mentoring can take “place over shorter blocks of time (as little as days, hours or even minutes) than a traditional mentoring relationship. By “breaking the support experience into bite-size exchanges (it) does more to increase younger students’ appetite to keep going than the traditional one-to-one mentoring model.”
The article talks about how micro-mentoring can focus on a wide variety of things, from life skills and wellness development, to career or the major a student is considering. “When promoting a micro-mentoring programme, it’s useful to meet students where they are.” “In moving from traditional long-term and in-depth mentoring relationships, institutions should seek to begin student engagement in mentoring with ‘micro’ mentoring… provide on-demand assistance when students need it. Promoting these opportunities as low stakes and high impact through a lens that students can relate to will encourage mentoring as a safe activity and a place to find answers to problems or barriers.”
Again, this is almost verbatim describing the TalentDreams program.
Conclusion
TalentDreams is changing the way mentoring can take place and is leveling the playing field for young people.
