Talent is what you have. A dream is where you start. Action is how you get there!

The TalentDreams Manifesto

Creating space for life-changing conversations.

Motto: Helping tomorrow’s leaders discover their Talent and pursue their Dreams today.

Vision:  Empowering today’s youth and young adults to realize their full potential.

Mission: To inspire, enrich, and mentor young people so they can discover, embrace, and express their Talent and pursue their Dreams.

“Micro-mentorship is the mentoring version of a coffee break, but with a punch. It’s focused, goal-oriented advice and learning moments that are short and sweet, yet impactful.”
Dorie Clark, Executive Education Professor at Columbia University’s Columbia Business School

1. Core Identity & Philosophical Foundation

The central tenet of TalentDreams is access

The more access someone has, the more likely they are to achieve their potential. Access is almost the definition of privilege. Obviously, not everyone has the same access to resources, and everyone benefits from greater access to more resources. A key reason we evolve as individuals, especially during our foundational developmental phase from youth through young adulthood, is that we learn something we simply didn’t know before. This is the simplest form and essence of mentorship. It’s hard to do this without access. Even a passing conversation, at the right time, can be powerful.

Historically, there have been some significant obstacles, barriers, and areas of friction when it comes to mentoring…

For mentees:

  • I don’t know any mentors
  • I don’t know anyone who has the knowledge I’m looking for
  • I don’t have access to a mentor program
  • It’s too much time
  • It’s too hard to do

This is especially the case for disadvantaged youth and young adults who don’t have access to the same resources as others. Whether they come from a non-supportive or difficult home environment, struggle academically or socially in school, or face other challenges… everyone deserves the same access to resources.

Supporting underserved youth

At TalentDreams, we support underserved youth by providing social-emotional learning resources and supplementing positive adult role models where family support or home environments may not be ideal. We help empower youth to discover their inner leader, build self-confidence, and expand their network.

Many youth experience challenging and vulnerable circumstances and benefit from support developing the assets necessary to make positive life choices, set goals, act with intention, and ultimately build vibrant, successful lives through direct contact and relationships with caring, positive adult role models… which is exactly the role our Champions help fulfill.

How we support underserved youth:

  • Social-Emotional Development: Our Champions support young people in developing critical life skills, including resilience, persistence, grit, and a sense of self-worth. These emotional skills act as a buffer against negative behaviors that block forward progress.
  • Network Expansion: Dreamers build social capital by connecting with Champions across various professions, with widely varied life experiences. This positive connection helps overcome the isolation that can result from economic disadvantage.
  • Academic Success: Among other things, mentors help hold youth accountable, assist with educational transitions, and demystify the college application process.

It’s been shown that mentoring significantly increases the likelihood that disadvantaged students will graduate from high school, enroll in college, and succeed in adulthood.

TalentDreams offers micro-mentoring sessions to help youth discover their unique talents and pursue their dreams to enrich not only their lives but also the communities they live in.

For mentors:

There are often obstacles, barriers, and areas of friction for mentors as well…

  • I don’t know enough
  • I’m not sure who would benefit from what I know
  • I’m not successful enough
  • I don’t have the time
  • It’s too difficult or complicated

TalentDreams is on a mission to reduce and, wherever possible, eliminate these blockers. We’ve created a program so lightweight and easy for everyone to participate in that virtually every concern a mentee or mentor might have has been addressed.

We call our mentors “Champions”. And we call our mentees “Dreamers”.

Every great program begins with a Problem Statement. This starts with a question, and the question we wanted to answer with TalentDreams was:

What is the least amount of time and effort that will yield the greatest impact in supporting the vastly underserved population of youth ages 14-22?

The answer comes in the form of micro-mentoring. There is no quicker, easier, or more scalable way to make an impact. You can learn more under the Micro-Mentoring section below.

MENTOR National, the preeminent organization focused on advocating for mentorship in America, talks about how “Potential is equally distributed; opportunity is not. A major driver of healthy development and opportunity is who you know and who’s in your corner.”

Since our inception, our goal has been to put more resources in our Dreamers’ corner. These resources come in the form of our Champions.

This is how TalentDreams helps provide our Dreamers with access.

Why “TalentDreams”?

People love to talk about Talent. And everyone has Dreams, especially when they’re young. The reality… is that neither is enough. In fact, what’s more important than either is the effort you put into developing Talent, and then the effort you put into achieving the Dream.

Angela Duckworth is an acclaimed American psychologist and author. Angela is the Professor of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, and is best known for her landmark research on “grit”: the combination of passion and perseverance to achieve long-term goals. In her book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, Duckworth quotes someone she’s known a long time, from college and the decades to follow:

“It was a really winding road that took me to all kinds of places. And it was difficult, and discouraging, and demoralizing, and scary, and all the rest. But eventually, I got here. I got exactly where I wanted to be.”

Most of us can probably identify with this. At TalentDreams, our goal is to make that road a little easier. By providing a little more support and help along the way.

Talent doesn’t guarantee success. And yet, we’re all talented enough to be successful. This implies that talent alone isn’t enough.

Mix the right amount of effort with a little support… and the sky’s the limit!

But, how many teenagers and young adults:

  1. Truly understand what their talents or dreams are?
  2. Receive the encouragement to put in the effort to develop and achieve them?
  3. Have the support to help them do all this?

This is the problem statement TalentDreams is helping solve. But we can only do so with the community’s participation and, in particular, the involvement of our Champions.

Angela has a formula for grit:

  • Talent x Effort = Skill
  • Skill x Effort = Achievement

While it may start with Talent, Effort plays a role in both formulas. It takes grit to achieve your dreams. The reality is that without effort, talent is worthless. And the path to success involves far more effort than just developing your talent. You then have to apply it in order to achieve your dream.

The foundation for all of this is passion. Angela frames ‘passion as a compass’. But no one is handed a compass. You have to build your own, and then it can help guide you along your long and winding road to where you ultimately want to be. Passion doesn’t just magically appear. It’s born out of our interest, and developed as we focus more time on that interest. Building your compass is hard. But the more access you have, the easier it is.

Childhood is generally far too early to know what we want to be when we grow up. Most people only begin to gravitate toward certain vocational interests, and away from others, around middle school. And interests are not discovered through introspection. Instead, interests are triggered by interactions with the outside world. This is critical, and again, we’re reliant upon access.

The process of interest discovery can be messy, serendipitous, and inefficient. This is because you can’t really predict with certainty what will capture your attention and what won’t. Without experimenting, you can’t figure out which interests will stick and which won’t. This is the process of building your compass.

Paradoxically, the initial discovery of an interest often goes unnoticed by the discoverer. In other words, when you just start to get interested in something, you may not even realize that’s what’s happening. This is the power of a MentorMoment™ (learn more in the Our Operational Model section below).

What follows the initial discovery of an interest is a much lengthier and increasingly proactive period of interest development. Crucially, the initial triggering of a new interest must be followed by subsequent encounters that retrigger your attention—again and again and again.

Building the Compass

The first step to developing your talent is Discovery. This is based on experimentation and talking to people. The second step is Developing. The foundation for this is seeking others to learn from. Champions.

Angela talks about how interests thrive when there is a crew of encouraging supporters, including parents, teachers, coaches, and peers. And Champions! Why are other people so important? For one thing, they provide the ongoing stimulation and information that is essential to actually liking something more and more. Also—more obviously—positive feedback makes us feel happy, competent, and secure.

The development of skill progresses through three different stages, each lasting several years. Interests are discovered and developed in what are called “the early years.” Encouragement during the early years is crucial because beginners are still figuring things out.

All of this underscores how vital Champions can be to the progress and development of our Dreamers. Champions can help with interest discovery and provide the encouragement so critical to developing a skill.

We would add one preliminary component to the formula provided by Duckworth:

  • Passion x Effort = Talent
  • Talent x Effort = Skill
  • Skill x Effort = Achievement

We all possess talent, but it takes work to identify it. Passion is the compass that guides us towards our talent and eventually fuels the effort to achieve our dreams. Our logo, as a compass, embodies this.

But a compass alone doesn’t get you anywhere. To make progress requires effort. This is the only thing that will drive us along the journey towards our destination. If talent is the sail, wind is the effort. And sometimes effort needs a little encouragement!

Our goal is to help Dreamers find their compass, cultivate their passion, and support them on their journey.

The TalentDreams Paradigm

At TalentDreams, we operate on a fundamental truth: every young person possesses a unique spectrum of innate talents and has big dreams. However, the path to identifying and expressing these capabilities is often hard to discern due to a lack of guidance, limited exposure, or insufficient support systems. We believe that with your help, by providing intentional support in small ways during these pivotal developmental years, we can act as a catalyst, transforming latent potential into actualized outcomes, delivering breakthrough moments.

We’ve chosen to focus on serving ages 14-22. There are many great childhood development programs that generally wrap up as youth enter their early teen years. Similarly, there are many excellent career development programs that serve young adults 18-25+. There is a huge program gap from early teens through young adults in their early 20’s. When we started TalentDreams, programs serving this population were almost nonexistent. Yet this is when some of the biggest decisions of our lives are made, and we don’t have that much experience or wisdom to draw on.

Micro-Mentoring

Our philosophy merges the inspirational energy of widespread idea-sharing with the structured, long-term impact of individual youth mentorship, through short-term micro-mentoring. We’ve pioneered the notion that something short-term can make a long-term impact. High-impact guidance doesn’t have to be heavy, restrictive, or burdened with a high barrier to entry. In fact, a lightweight, highly accessible framework designed to scale rapidly while maintaining profound interpersonal significance has the potential to make a huge impact.

We believe a single conversation, at the right time, has the power to change someone’s life. We also understand that not every conversation will. But we’ll never know until that conversation has the chance to take place.

It’s also not just about having ONE conversation. It’s about the cumulative effect of having MANY conversations. This is what helps uncover someone’s passion. It’s rarely a light switch moment. It’s more of a dimmer knob being turned over time. Our Champions can help them turn the knob.

There are many amazing long-term, high-barrier mentoring programs. They are the bedrock of the mentorship ecosystem. And TalentDreams fills a vacuum in a way no other program has before. Together, we create a comprehensive fabric for strong mentoring that makes a lasting impact.

We can’t do any of this, without Champions. We want to help create a world that works for everyone. With your very small contribution of time as a Champion, we can make progress towards achieving that.

2. Our Framework: The Micro-Version of Big Brothers Big Sisters Meets TEDx

TalentDreams bridges the gap between deep, localized individual mentorship and large, wide-reaching inspirational events by occupying a unique “micro-scale” operational model—going wide to establish a protective net of support rather than using a narrow, singular focus.

Today, our focus is exclusively on the micro-mentoring pillar of the program. The evolution of the program is short online and in-person workshops.

3. Methodological Excellence: The Core Concepts

To execute our mission with rigor, our onboarding and ongoing development models are built directly on evidence-based standards, developed in conjunction with MENTOR California and anchored heavily within the Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring™. Our proprietary training system prepares our community through two vital milestones:

  • New Champion Training (NCT): Our comprehensive online instructional curriculum ensures all mentors are equipped with safety policies, understand boundaries, and have communication toolkits to effectively guide minors and young adults.
  • New Champion Orientation (NCO): A collaborative, interactive forum where we deeply explore and operationalize our three key pillars:
  • Growth Mindset: Teaching youth to view challenges as opportunities for mental and professional expansion.
  • Social-Emotional Learning (SEL): Embedding empathy, emotional regulation, and relationship-building skills into every conversation.
  • The Power of Leadership: Showing young people that leadership has nothing to do with a title, and is, in fact, the action of taking ownership of their own life, which they’re capable of, and leads to positive outcomes.

4. Our Operational Model

Simplicity dictates our operations. The mechanism for matching our emerging leaders (“Dreamers”) with established professionals (“Champions”) relies on clarity and choice:

  1. The Champion Portfolio: Champions maintain active online profiles highlighting their core competencies, professional backgrounds, industry knowledge, and tactical skills.
  2. The Dreamer Request: Just as TalentDreams encourages Dreamers to cultivate agency in their own lives, they can review our portal and request a conversation directly with Champions whose paths resonate with their goals and aspirations.
  3. The MentorMoment™: Upon the Champion’s acceptance, a highly focused 30-minute virtual micro-mentoring session occurs, providing targeted, dynamic, and actionable insights.

5. Call to Action: The Commitment to Tomorrow

TalentDreams is more than an organization; it is an active infrastructure of belief. We believe that talent is universally distributed, but access to help discover and develop that talent is not. By systematically removing the friction from mentoring, we’re constructing an ecosystem where the leaders of tomorrow don’t have to wait for the future to find their calling… they can define it today.
